Attach Back Linings to the Sides.

In this lesson we will attach the back linings to the sides.

Make sure you have read this lesson all the way through before beginning the lesson. A word of advice is to practice on scrap.

Use mahogany or Spanish cedar for the back linings. They should be about 14mm tall, 3mm thick and about 28"+ long.

Bend them to shape on a pipe or Fox bender then fit them to the inner sides.

After fitting, round over the edge that will be on the soundboard side of the lining. Use a scraper and sandpaper.

I like to use Gorilla glue for the back linings. Once your linings fit properly make a clamping caul from some scrap veneer or cardboard. Wax the inner side of the caul so glue will not stick. Use "C" clamps at the waist and spring clamps for the rest. Do a dry run first and check for gaps. If there is a small gap I will use a "C" clamp at that spot. Gorilla glue foams up when it dries and will fill minor gaps. This is usually just an aesthetic concern.

*NOTE*
If your sides were to short in height you can make your linings stick up a few milimeters above the top. You will also need to add a few milimeters to the tail block. I had to do this in the lower bout area.

Here it is all clamped up. Clean the excess glue with an alcohol soaked rag if you are using Gorilla glue. It will keep foaming for about 30 minutes so do this several times.
