Online Apprentice-
Fit the Back

In this lesson we will fit the back.

Make sure you have read this lesson all the way through before beginning the lesson. A word of advice is to practice on scrap.

Align the back to the tail and tape it in place.

Do the same at the heel.

Mark the brace positions on the lining.

Mark the brace where it meets the side.

Remove the back. Subtract 2mm from the line you just drew. Cut to this mark with a razor saw.

Chisel away the excess.

Measure the depth of each brace.

Transfer that measurement to the lining.

Slowly remove the excess wood with a chisel. Check the fit of the back frequently. You will probably install and remove the back many times. Remember to check the alignment at the heel and tail!

Perfect fit!

Here is what it will look like.
